Lyric For Lyric: Mondo Cozmo – Plastic Soul

Mondo Cozmo - Plastic Soul

Mondo Cozmo – “Plastic Soul”
Didn’t I see you fighting in the war
Back in nineteen forty two
Every time I shape shift into form
I’m standing there right next to you
I keep searching all these dying stars
Just to get a glimpse of you
And all I have to do to drift away
Is close my eyes and think of you

Whenever I think of her (x5)

Didn’t I see you tearing down the wall
Back in nineteen eighty nine
Didn’t you feel my hand against your heart
When I told you you were always mine

The best days of all my lives were spent dreaming of the afterlife (x3)

Whenever I think of her (x5)

The idea behind the song: “you know my wife and I always joked about if we would meet up like in the next life. If we’d keep meeting up. I just thought that was a cool way to think about things.” – Mondo Cozmo. Wow, cool indeed and it makes for a truly phenomenal song.  This song is so good it haunts me.  Especially the line “the best days of all my lives were spent dreaming of the afterlife.”  That was stuck in my head and part of the reason why I decided to post the lyrics for “Plastic Soul”.

[GREAT NEWS] Mondo Cozmo will be at Boot & Saddle on Wednesday, February 1, 2017. Tickets go on sale this Friday (11/18) at 12PM EST.  I’ll see you there!

Songful Sundays: 11-13-16 The Sound Of Solace

Songful Sundays on Spotify
Songful Sundays
is a Spotify playlist with a new theme each week featuring an array of genres and songs (new and past faves).  This is a new take on music curation for me although trying to focus on a theme might make it a little easier to update each week.

11-13-16 The Sound Of Solace
I wanted to start this series off with a playlist of bright, shiny tunes but solace prevailed.  Comfort, support and relief are encoded in these songs whether it’s lyrical or musical.  Maybe hope and solace go together because this playlist gives me that feeling too.  Give it a listen—you be the judge.

Hold On To Me – Mondo Cozmo
The Light – The Album Leaf
Yeshe & Horus – Hezekiah Jones
Heartless – Adrien Reju
Call It Off – Val Emmich

Live Review: Archawah at Kung Fu Necktie (10/21/16)

archawah-102116_04

Since Friday night’s setting upstairs at Kung Fu Necktie felt like a house party that is how Archawah decided to approach their performance.  They played a set filled with energy, great music and entertaining banter.  Archawah delivered a performance fit for any house party and or any good time.

Earlier in the night Thee Idea Men, The Ohio Weather Band, and Anjuli Josephine performed on the upstairs stage at Kung Fu Necktie.  Each act did their best to perform as if the small crowd that gathered in this tiny venue were all that mattered.  I think they all accomplished that.

Tracklist:

Until I figure out how to proceed with the music podcast idea that I’ve been playing around with I’ll share some music finds via playlists with you.  I hope you enjoy the selection!

1. “City by the Sea” by Chris Kasper is a brand new track from his new album coming early 2017.  This song completely embodies the effortless relaxing feel of living in a, as the title states, city by the sea.  “Say you love, oh, say you’ll let me be.”

2. “Stupid Love” by Ben Arnold is just an example of one of the many gems found on Arnold’s current release Lost Keys.

3. “Hard Times Don’t Come” by Son of Dov is the final track off of the Night Vision (EP) with its beautiful songwriting, bold message, and brilliant musical sound.  Is that a mandolin I hear?  Sure, keep my ears guessing—I love it.

4. “Over You Over Me” by Alright Junior off their unreleased album, Inhibition, coming October 1st. This track is exemplary of Alight Junior’s unrelenting rock spirit that is always appreciated.

5. “Jungles” by Archawah from the latest EP Archawah 2 gives us sincere singing dipped in eclectic soundscapes and a great jam.

6. “All I Ever Wanted From You” by Val Emmich is the closing track on Whatever’s Chasing You, Emmich’s newest album.  Val Emmich is an exceptional singer-songwriter and this chorus go straight to the point “All I ever wanted from you / Was a little itty-bitty thank you / All I ever wanted from you / Was just a little something to prove / That you cared too”.  I can feel the emotion!

7. “Ambo” by The Album Leaf can be found on the deluxe release of Between Waves through the Philly based label, Relapse Records. I was fortunate enough to catch The Album Leaf’s show at Johnny Brenda’s last week and it was incredible.  I like how this tracks takes me back to In A Safe Place, the first The Album Leaf album I ever heard. Good memories.

8. “Shine” by Mondo Cozmo is another cherished single from this new music chapter.  Have you seen the video for “Hold On To Me”?  Awe-inspiring.  Can’t wait to see/hear what’s next.

9. “Shenandoah” by Mason Porter is simply another great song by one of my favorite bands.  Mason Porter have perfected their take on the bluegrass/Americana sound and it is beautiful.

10. “4 Mile Creek” by Todd Barneson from Lay Low makes an awesome outro that will get you moving.  I bet you can’t sit still while listening to this one.

11. “Spirit” by Amos Lee is the title track from the album of the same name.  Like a lot of Amos Lee’s songs this one holds a lot of hope and warmth.  Amazing.  By the way, did you see Amos Lee at the Academy of Music a few weeks ago?  Phenomenal performance, indeed.

12. “A-Frame” by Square Peg Round Hole off of Juniper is a song from a band that isn’t afraid to explore and experiment with sound who make some wonderful creations along the way.

13. “Patience To Undo the Patience” by Psalmships is sonically an epic tale between the darkness and the light with lyrics providing much of the same yet there is hope in that confident and commanding voice. Hauntingly good.

14. “Into The Storm” by BANNERS is a new single released this past Friday.  I first heard BANNERS’ “Start A Riot” on AltNation near the beginning of this year.  I became a fan immediately.  I was fortunate enough to see BANNERS at The Foundry during AltNation’s Advance Placement Tour this past March.  BANNERS is a great singer-songwriter and that voice is an undeniably beautiful instrument.  Some days I sit and listen to “Ghosts” on repeat because I just can’t get enough.

15. “Americana Dream” by Firekid an artist who I was first introduced to when they opened for Kaleo at The Foundry this past February.  Good sound and an interesting use of outdated video game systems.  If you like what you hear you can catch Firekid at MilkBoy Philly on Wednesday, October 5th.  I want to go to there.

Live Review: Val Emmich & The Veeries at Maxwell’s Tavern (09/17/16)

Val Emmich & The Veeries

Val Emmich & The Veeries at Maxwell’s Tavern (09/17/16)

Seeing Val Emmich & The Veeries again clearly made my Saturday.  Val Emmich is an extremely talented singer-songwriter and The Veeries are an exceptional band.  I won’t bore you with my words I just hope that these photos and videos give an idea of the caliber of awesomeness that was displayed at this show.

VIDEO: Val Emmich & The Veeries “Wooly Mammoths” at Maxwell’s Tavern (09/17/16)
VIDEO: Val Emmich & The Veeries “Just To Feel Alive Again” at Maxwell’s Tavern (09/17/16)

Christina Alessi & The Toll Collectors opened the show performing as a three-piece band instead of their usual five-piece band arrangement.  Christina Alessi provides the vocals on Emmich’s “Hey Hey Hey”.  A song that Val Emmich & The Veeries performed during their set in the audience unplugged with Christina Alessi.  An absolutely beautiful moment.
